3.12 SHARED PARENTAL LEAVE AND PAY

PNB Circular 2015/01

(a) Mothers, fathers, adopters, prospective parents in the ‘fostering for adoption’ system and intended parents in a surrogacy arrangement are able to share parental leave around their child’s birth or placement.  The current statutory maternity/adoption leave and pay arrangements will continue to operate, however officers will be able to elect to bring their leave and pay to an early end and share the balance with their partner.  Shared parental leave can be taken after the second week the baby is born or for adoption, after the person claiming adoption pay has taken at least 2 weeks adoption leave. This leave will last for a maximum of 50 weeks of leave and 37 weeks of statutory pay.

(b) For periods of unpaid leave refer to section 3.15 in relation to entitlement for pension purposes.
