How Can We Help?
2.12 ACTING / TEMPORARY RANKS
Police Service of Scotland (Promotion) Regulations 2013
Police Service of Scotland (Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations 2020
2.12.1 Purpose
Acting up arrangements are designed to meet the operational need when a shortfall has been identified in a particular rank e.g. maternity leave cover, ill health absence and new projects/workstreams etc.
There is an 18 month maximum period for all federated and superintending rank officers acting up to a higher rank.
2.12.2 Pay and Pension Status
All periods of temporary duty performed at a higher rank are reckonable for pay and pension purposes with effect from 1 January 2023. An officer will progress on the higher pay scale as though they had been permanently promoted.
Temporary Promotion
2.12.3 Purpose
Temporary promotions are to be used in the following circumstances:
- Police leadership Development Programme (PLDP)
- Accelerated Leadership Pathway (ALP)
- Where the role has a legislative requirement to be undertaken as a temporary promotion rather than in an acting capacity.
This will provide an interim solution regarding the use of acting ranks in certain posts, until a longer term solution can be developed and implemented.
2.12.4 Pay and Pension Status
All periods of temporary duty performed at a higher rank are reckonable for pay and pension purposes with effect from 1 January 2023. An officer will progress on the higher pay scale as though they had been permanently promoted.
