3.17 PARENTAL BEREAVEMENT LEAVE

PNBS Circular 2025/06

PNBS Circular 2025/08

(a) Police officers with parental responsibilities are entitled to two weeks leave at full pay if they lose a child under the age of 18, suffer a stillbirth from 24 weeks of pregnancy, or loss up to 24 weeks pregnant.

(b) This will include a loss as a result of a miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy or termination, or an unsuccessful attempt at in vitro fertilisation as a result of embryo transfer loss (in line with eligibility considerations currently taking place with regards to the Employment Rights Bill).

(c) This provision will be available to both parents, who may either choose to take one or two weeks leave within 56 weeks of the child’s death without the need for these weeks to be consecutive.

(d) This will be a day one right for all officers who join the Police Service of Scotland.

(e) Reference should be made to section 3.15 where it is felt that two weeks leave at full pay is insufficient in light of the particular circumstances.
